Aback is a condition in which the wind has filled the sails from forward pushing the sails against the masts and is trying to push the ship backwards.
This may be done at times on purpose, usually one or more sails as opposed to all of them, to slow or stop the ship's forward motion
It can also be used as a term of shock or surprise, 'Hornblower was taken aback'.
