Athwart

Athwart, sometimes referred to as 'athwartships', refers to side-to-side aboard a vessel.
The seats on a boat for the crew are known as 'thwarts' and run athwart, or from side to side in the boat.
When a ship is running before the wind, the yards and sails are oriented athwart, or across the ship.
