The bowsprit is a spar extending forward from the prow of a sailing vessel. It anchors the forestay for the foremast allowing it to be stepped more forward in the ship. It can also provide anchor for jibs.

The tension of the forestay and jibs is taken by the bobstay or combination of bobstay, martingale stay, and dolphin striker.
