220px-Brigantine

Brigantine sail plan.

A brigantine is a two-masted vessel, the aft mast being the main mast, similar to a brig, except the main mast has a square topsail and a gaff-rigged sail. This sail plan made the ship more manoeuvrable and was used by many pirates and privateers. The brigantine, like the brig, can also use a trysail and jibsail.
The main mast of the brigantine is in two parts, the main and the top. The main mast on a brig is three parts, the main, top, and topgallant.
