Caldwell was a midshipman aboard HMS Goliath who, along with Lieutenant Chalk, met HMS Justinian midshipmen Simpson and Hornblower in the Lamb Inn during a press gang detail.
While at the Inn, the foursome played whist after which Simpson accused Hornblower of cheating. Hornblower then challenged Simpson to a duel.
