A compass is a navigation device containing a magnet which aligns itself with the magnetic field of the earth and a 'compass rose' marked with the cardinal directions to indicate the ship's heading. The ship's compass is kept in the binnacle near the ship's wheel so that the helmsman may keep the heading as the captain or the Officer of the Deck may direct.
The Captain may purchase his own compass for use in his cabin.
The compass rose is a card on the top of the magnet and rotates with it to indicate direction and is divided into 32 named directions or points. When commanded to come to a heading, the helmsman is directed to come to one of the named headings; when commanded to change the current heading, the helmsman is directed 'larboard or starboard' one or two points.
There are 32 points on the compass, each being 11¼° from the last. Any good officer and seaman can 'box the compass' by naming the points in correct order beginning with the North.
