Jamaica is the third largest island of the Greater Antilles south of Cuba and west of Hispaniola. It was a British colony since it was conquered from Spain in 1655. Kingston (Port Royal) was established as the capital after the earthquake of 1692.
Although sailing directly from England for the mission at Santo Domingo, HMS Renown operated under the command of the admiral at Kingston.
