Jordan was a seaman aboard HMS Indefatigable, the under-coxswain of the longboat.
When Hornblower, Mr. Tapling, and the longboat crew was quarantined because they may have been exposed to the Black Plague in Oran, they took command of the transport brig Caroline. Jordan was appointed as an Officer of the Watch.
