La Gaditana is the name of largest of the three privateers taken as prizes when the Spanish surrendered at Scotchman's Bay. It was commanded by Lieutenant Hornblower during the trip to Kingston, Jamaica.

It was during this trip that the Spanish attempted to take over HMS Renown, and while Captain Sawyer was killed while bound in his cabin, First Lieutenant Buckland was bound in his cabin by the Spanish, and Lieutenant Bush was severely injured during the battle, Hornblower was able to gather his crew members from all three of the prizes and returned to Renown to retake the ship from the Spaniards.

Shortly after the arrival of Renown and the prizes, La Gaditana was taken into the Royal Navy service as sloop of war and renamed HMS Retribution by Sir Richard Lambert, Vice Admiral of the Blue, K.B.
