Marines are naval infantry. Their responsibilities include maintaining discipline on the ship, by providing guards at key points, like the captain's cabin or magazines, boarding other ships and providing a military unit for shore operations. They were not involved in sailing the ships or manning their cannon, and often had a tense relationship with the seamen on the ship. They had an independent, army based, officer structure to the naval officers, reporting directly to the captain.
