Maxwell was a seaman aboard HMS Indefatigable, Captain Sir Edward Pellew commanding, during Hornblower's tour as Midshipman. He was coxswain of the longboat which was to arrange supplies from Oran to the Mediterranean fleet when it was discovered the presence of the Black Plague in Oran.
