The Mona Passage is the waterway between Santo Domingo (later, Dominican Republic) to the west and Puerto Rico to the east, connecting the Atlantic Ocean to the north and the Caribbean Sea to the south. It is one of the most difficult passages of the Caribbean Sea to traverse due to variable tidal waters and sand bars extending from the islands. Three islands populate the passage, Isla de Mona midway between Santo Domingo and Puerto Rico; Isla Monito, a small island just off the northwest coast of Isla de Mona; and Isla de Desecheo, another small island off the northwest coast of Puerto Rico.
