Reef has two meanings.

A reef refers to a bar of coral, rock, or sand lying beneath the surface of the water.

Reefing also refers to taking in the centre portion of a sail to reduce its surface area, effectively making it smaller, used in higher winds or storms.

Tackle fastened to a grommet or cringle on the edge of a sail to reef the sail is referred to as Reef Tackle.
