Smallbridge was the fictional town 5 miles SW of Maidstone, Kent that Hornblower took up residence as the Squire of Smallbridge Manor after returning from his time of captivity in France. He was made squire in 1812, and moved there after his marriage with Lady Barbara, employing Hebe and Brown as servants.
The Last Encounter, portraying Hornblower in retirement, is set entirely in Smallbridge Manor.
