The Honourable Sir William Cornwallis, GCB (born 10 February 1744, died 5 July 1819), was an admiral and commander-in-chief of the Channel fleet during Hornblower's tour as lieutenant aboard HMS Renown, and when Hornblower commanded HMS Hotspur in the blockade of Brest.
It was Cornwallis who gave Hornblower orders concerning Barry McCool, deserter, during his court martial and punishment by hanging.
